Changing Voices

I read Ink Exchange (book 2 in the Wicked Lovely series) immediately after finishing Wicked Lovely and found the change in perspective both intriguing and refreshing.  There are times, as a reader, when I can't wait to read the next book in a series but find myself becoming a bit tired of the same voice from book to book.  A character's dark and tortured world view can give a series depth but over the course of a series may become annoyingly depressing.  The same can be true of romance in a series.  I may dive into the next book hungry for more but the romance between characters loses it's appeal when a couple reaches that relationship pinnacle where all they do is gaze longingly at the other full of love. Ick.  I suppose you could say that I love the chase but lose interest at the finish line.  Too many series continue plodding on after the race is won.  Now I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that, since obviously many readers continue to read series with characters that no longer continue to develop, but my preference is to move on at this point.  This is why I love this new trend in YA Paranormal Romance series to bring individual characters to an exciting rapid conclusion within one book and then switch characters while remaining in the same magical world in the next book of the series.  For me, this keeps the series from becoming stale while giving the author the time to add depth and back story.

Yesterday I began reading Ballad: The Gathering of Faerie (Books of Faerie, book 2) and again loved the change from Dee to James.  I hope to see more of this trend in the future!
