Book Review: Shiver
Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, book 1) by Maggie Stiefvater.
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human ... until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.
A heartrending story of love and longing. Shiver begins as a tragic tale of loss, but just as the dark melancholy seeps in the reader is given hope. The promise of true love and happiness make the pain that these characters experience all the the more poignant. As demonstrated in her Books of Faerie series, Maggie Steifvater has an amazing ability to give each of her characters a distinct voice. I found that the voice of Sam lingered long after turning the last page of Shiver. This is a fabulous, yet painful, paranormal romance that brought me to tears and left me ravenous for the next book in the series.
I recommend Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, book 1) to readers of paranormal romance, young adult, urban fantasy, and especially to fans of modern werewolf fiction.
