Guest Author Interview: J.A. Saare
Please welcome today's guest author J.A. Saare! J.A. Saare is the author of Crimson Moon, A Kiss Before Dying, Moon Kissed, Soft as Moonlight, Lick of Frost, Hunger Undone, and Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between.
EJ: When did you begin writing?
JA: I started writing in June of 2008. I was burned out of being a stay at home mom and wanted to find some kind of way to escape what had become a routine of more of the same. I found that in escaping into these worlds I created, I could make time for myself. It was an amazing adventure that quickly became an obsession.
EJ: What brought you to the paranormal genre?
JA: I’ve always been a fan of the paranormal; as far back as I can remember. There is something so exciting about creatures and characters that are not restricted in the same ways humans are. While I have started writing contemporary works recently, I will always return to the paranormal genre. It’s impossible to resist, and remains one of my favorite genres to read as well.
EJ: If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?
JA: I’d choose a werewolf -- definitely. Werewolves have always been my favorite creature to read about, and I would love to experience what it’s like to view life through the eyes of a beast versus a woman. Of course, if I could have a supernatural talent, it would be to turn invisible. There are a lot of inventive (and mischievous) things I could do to people who aren’t aware I’m plotting something right in front of them. *smile*
EJ: Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.
JA: Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between has a little bit of everything -- a strong female protagonist, vampires, demons, action, danger. There is even a strip club and argumentative topless dancers. Of course, the flourishing romance between Rhiannon (the voice of the book) and Disco (the vampire she can’t seem to stop thinking about) is what people seem to love most about the story. As well as the darkness of the work and the subplot involving vampire hearts, Rhiannon’s increasingly powerful necromancy, and the cliffhanger that everyone keeps talking about.
EJ: If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?
JA: This is one of the hardest questions to answer, because the faces I picture when I’m creating my characters are usually not based off of any celebrity -- with the exception of two of them. As I was writing Crimson Moon, I pictured Chris Evans in the role of Caleb and Cam Gigandet in the role of Derek. I don’t know why really, aside from they just seemed to fit.
If I absolutely had to choose an actress to portray Emma, I’d probably say Emily Browning. For Rhiannon, the closest I can come up with is Sophia Bush. I get a lot of requests for celebrities who look like Trent, Paine, and Disco, but they are literally impossible to place. Their faces, in my mind, are totally unique.
Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between (Rhiannon's Law, book 1) by J.A. Saare
One bad corpse can ruin your whole day. No one knows that better than Rhiannon Murphy. She left behind the flash and sass of Miami for the no-nonsense groove of New York City, eager for a clean slate and a fresh start. A bartender by trade, a loud mouth by choice, and a necromancer by chance; she managed to keep her nifty talent hidden from those around her—until now.
The deliciously good-looking vampire, Disco, knows her secret. When he strolls into her bar to solicit help investigating the mysterious disappearances of his kind from the city, Rhiannon discovers he’s not the kind of person that appreciates the significance of the word no.
But in a world where vampires peddle their blood as the latest and greatest drug of choice, it’s only a matter of time before the next big thing hits the market. Someone or something is killing vampires to steal their hearts, and unlike Rhiannon, this isn’t their first stroll around the undead block.
Thank you J.A. for joining us here today at From the Shadows!

Book Review: Crusade
Crusade (Crusade, book 1) by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie.
The ultimate battle. The ultimate love. For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain's Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun. Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated—and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose. Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself—and her heart.
Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan's ...more
Vampires have taken over the populace, first with charm and then with fear, but there are those who will not give up without a fight. Crusade is an action-packed urban fantasy. In the dystopian world of Crusade vampires have come forward with promises of peace and unity, but these were lies to calm the public as they slowly, insidiously worked to take over cities, governments, and the world. Vampires are now in control of most of the planet and as their power grows their true monstrous nature is revealed. Most humans are either too enamored by or too fearful of the vampires to fight back and so they go about their daily lives as the vampires as their new masters use them as food...or worse. A few groups of humans have decided to fight back and have formed a small underground resistance. Among these fighters the most revered are the Hunters who are specially trained to kill vampires. Hunters are usually solitary fighters, but there is a group of Salamancan hunters trying to work as a team. Will they be able to set aside their differences long enough to face the enemy together?
I recommend Crusade (Crusade, book 1) to readers of paranormal suspense, fantasy, vampire fiction, and especially to fans of urban fantasy.

Teaser Tuesdays: Linger
"I was a paper boat drifting in a massive night ocean."
p.g 110, Linger by Maggie Stiefvater.
"I was an open wound."
p.g 165, Linger by Maggie Stiefvater.
Linger is the second book in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater. Though the two lines that I chose this week are not from the same page, they are representative of the dark emotions that pervade the pages of Linger.

Guest Author Interview: Lindsay Anne Kendal
Please welcome today's guest author Lindsay Anne Kendal! Lindsay is the author of Bloodlines.
EJ: When did you begin writing?
Lindsay: I began writing when I was 21. Just silly little stories that didn't go anywhere. Then I started to have panic attacks. I didn’t go outside the door and spent all my time in my room writing. At first it was just silly little stories again, but then, Bloodlines came into my head. I had the support of my family and close friends, and they encouraged me to write the whole story. At first it was just going to be one book, but as I was writing, I got more and more ideas. And so a trilogy was born.
EJ: What brought you to the paranormal genre?
Lindsay: I have had a love of all things weird, spooky, paranormal and supernatural since I was a kid. I always loved Halloween, and watching horror and fantasy films. I also used to read Point Horror books, so it fits really that I stick with what I love the most. It’s a genre that fascinates me and that you can really play with. There are very few limitations and you can really have fun writing it. I do intend on writing a good ghost story one day. Sadly, simply because I have seen so many on the TV, they don’t scare me anymore and I know a few other people who say the same. Maybe, just maybe, I could write something that will scare the pants of people.
EJ: If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?
Lindsay: Ok this is a hard question. Hmmm. I’ve always had an obsession with Vampires, so I would have to chose to be one of them. I love everything about them. To be able to live that long and see how the world changes, to meet people from tens of generations. They are basically history on legs. I would love to see what they see, have my senses heightened. That would be amazing.
EJ: Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.
Lindsay: I think people with enjoy the book for a few reasons, or should I say I hope they like it. The characters are great. Each have their own strong personalities, and opinions. The storyline itself is different to anything out there at the moment. It touches on demonology and does deal in some facts. There are serious, funny and sad moments throughout and I have been told the characters could become role models for people. They are very likeable. If people like magic, weird and wonderful, with a hint of tension, romance and horror. They will hopefully enjoy reading Bloodlines.
EJ: If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?
Lindsay: If my books were turned into films, I wouldn’t really want well known actors/actresses in them. I am a new author and my publisher took me on and gave me a chance to tell my story to the world, and do what I love doing. What I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I would love to give an aspiring actor/actress the chance to prove themselves too.
Bloodlines by Lindsay Anne Kendal.
Keira Jameson used to lead a normal life, she just had a gift, passed down through the generations of her family. Now, after hearing voices, having strange dreams of others calling out to her, and her grandfather's last words haunting her, she sets out to find other families like hers. Along with her best friend Lily, the only person outside her family to know about her gift, Keira begins a hunt for her ancestors. A chance meeting with a young man, Lucian Turner, sets them on the right track, but their discoveries change the way Keira will see herself for ever more. Fear, superstition and heritage are shaping Keira's future and she must face her enemies, even if this could mean losing her life. She cannot escape her destiny.
Part Buffy-style horror, part tender romance, Bloodlines will have fans of the genre on tenterhooks waiting for the next instalment of this gripping and hell-raising tale.
Thank you Lindsay for joining us here today at From the Shadows!
Today is Lindsay's birthday so be sure to leave her some comment love! :)

Book Review: Linger
Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, book 2) by Maggie Stiefvater.
Their eyes, human eyes in wolf skulls, remind me of water: the clear blue of water reflecting the spring sky, the brown of a brook churning with rainfall, the green of the lake in summer as the algae begins to bloom, the gray of a snow-choked river. It used to be only Sam's yellow eyes that watched me from between the rain soaked birches, but now, I feel the weight of the entire pack's gaze. The weight of things known, things unsaid.
Worse, Meghan's ...more
Guilt, grief, fear, and longing. The characters of Linger all have their own demons lingering just beneath the surface, demons that they must ultimately face. The Wolves of Mercy Falls series is filled with tragedy, loss, and love. The paranormal elements of these books, though integral to the story, are overshadowed by the deeply felt emotions of each character. The voice of each character feels even more raw and tortured in this novel. In Shiver, the first book in the series, these young adults are each dealing with the heavy weight of the emotional baggage they carry. These characters, and the newly introduced characters of this book, are not just burdened. In Linger these characters are broken. Will love, friendship, and strength of will be enough to help them pick up the pieces?
I highly recommend Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, book 2) to readers of paranormal romance, young adult, urban fantasy, fantasy, and especially to fans of werewolf fiction. These books are on the darker side of young adult fantasy and may not be an ideal choice for sensitive readers.

Guest Author Interview: Jacqueline Paige + Tour Giveaway
Please welcome today's guest author Jacqueline Paige! Jacqueline is the author of Solstice Heat, Beltane Magic, Behind the Mask, From a Dream, In Our Dream, Salvation, and Mystic Perceptions.
EJ: When did you begin writing?
Jacqueline: I think I’ve always been writing in one way or another, even when I was growing up I always had a notebook with me. I forgot writing (except to-do lists) for many years while my kids were tiny and then my mind started to wander away to other places again. My first serious attempt at something longer than a poem was in 2006 – which I hid away until 2009 before I bit the bullet and submitted it somewhere. The last year has been a blur of writing, editing and trying to keep up with my muse, publishers and real life outside of the world of words.
EJ: What brought you to the paranormal genre?
Jacqueline: For most of my life I read in the contemporary or historical genre, and I loved it but was always thinking ‘what if’ while reading. I love the paranormal genre because it doesn’t seem restricted by any preconceived guidelines that the readers expect. I can take a seemingly normal person and give them any ability, talent, curse or make entirely different species and that’s okay by the readers.
EJ: If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?
Jacqueline: If I could be any paranormal I would definitely have to be a shifter, of the cat variety. I would love to just go run through the mountain or forest whenever I needed to blow off steam. If on the other hand I had to keep this body I would want a mind talent, so I could listen to people’s thoughts. I’m a people watcher by nature and sometimes I’m astounded by the things people do and would just love to peek inside their heads and find out why they did it.
EJ: Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.
Jacqueline: Mystic Perceptions is the first in my Hidden Senses Trilogy. It’s a physic ability story. In it the main character, Jacinda, has a ‘gift’ that she’d rather not have. Not only can she touch someone and actually feel their emotions, but she can do the same with objects and more or less see the history of the most recent people that have touched it. As you can imagine this isn’t exactly a good ability to have and because of it she has had to live most of her life alone.
EJ: If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?
Jacqueline: For Jacinda I would have to go with Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn from Buffy – only the grown up version). I think Michelle would have the proper presence to play Jacinda, being a little defensive and cautious but strong enough to follow through. And after a long time of thinking, she resembles the Jacinda I had in my head while writing the story. For Reid I would go with Wentworth Miller (Michael from Prison Break). Reid is an internal thought type of person, and I think Wentworth would pull it off very well – and he has pretty eyes, just like the character I created.
Mystic Perceptions (Hidden Senses Trilogy, book 1) by Jacqueline Paige.
Jacinda Brown keeps to her safe existence doing investigative research, avoiding people and places with people. To most, it appears she has a normal life; blending completely undetected in her lonely continuation. She doesn’t investigate people; she can’t get that close. Through her hand she can feel emotions, thoughts. With a touch she can see what has been. Unfortunately fate tosses her into a situation where her carefully guarded secret and her own conscience are at war when she finds herself working with detectives to find a killer. Jacinda clashes with the very strongly grounded detective, Reid Merritt, destiny has forced her to work with. At some point he begins to matter, making her decision harder. Will he look at her with abhorrence, like she’s some sort of freak when she’s through? When the fifth murder happens, Jacinda makes the decision to use her gift to find the killer. She doesn’t let herself think of how she’s going to suffer afterward, the consequences that will curse her again, the chance she’ll be giving up everything and starting all over. She just thinks of finding some justice and stopping a killer. What will be the price, this time, for the ability she doesn’t want?

Teaser Tuesdays: City of Ashes
"He'd felt like a jack-o'-lantern for the past few days, as if his guts had been yanked out with a fork and dumped in a heap while a grinning smile stayed plastered on his face. He often wondered if anything he'd believed about his life, or himself, had ever been true."
p.g 18, City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare.
City of Ashes is the second book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. When I read these lines I knew immediately that I wanted this for my TT. The imagery is vivid and visceral.
So my questions this week is: Have you ever felt like a holiday item?

Guest Author Interview: Ryan Mecum
Please welcome today's guest author Ryan Mecum! Ryan is the author of Zombie Haiku: Good Poetry for Your...Brains, Vampire Haiku, and Werewolf Haiku.
EJ: When did you begin writing?
Ryan: Every day in 5th Grade, I had to write for 5 minutes in my creative writing journal. I remember being excited when the teacher told the class that we could writing about anything. That was the best advice... you can write about anything.
EJ: What brought you to the paranormal genre?
Ryan: Growing up on a steady diet of Stephen Spielberg and Stephen King.
EJ: If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?
Ryan: Not a mind reader. Gross. I'd like to fly. Give me some wings, please.
EJ: Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.
Ryan: Because who doesn't like a disgusting werewolf mixed with poetry? Think of it as a contemporary Beowulf that doesn't suck.
EJ: If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?
Ryan: Everything I write is for Steve Buscemi.
Werewolf Haiku by Ryan Mecum.
These pages contain the heartbreaking story of a repressed man who slowly loses control of his inner beast after he’s bitten by a werewolf. As he wrestles with the monster inside, he chronicles his feelings and urges in a haiku journal. The resulting poems are gross, strange, dark and hilarious. Together, they tell the story of a mailman who is in love with a woman on his route, but has never had the courage to tell her. As the beast comes out, wreaking havoc on his life, the man learns that his werewolf side might actually be able to help him in his quest for love.

Book Review: Paranormalcy
Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, book 1) by Kiersten White.
Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal. Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. So much for normal.
Worse, Meghan's ...more
Evie may have the ability to see through the glamours that shroud most paranormals, but will she be able to see through the lies and misdirection in time to save herself? Paranormalcy is the fabulous beginning to a new urban fantasy series. I wasn't sure, initially, if I would like such a pink-obsessed heroine, but quickly came to enjoy Evie's character. Evie is the perfect YA combination of awkward teen insecurities and butt kicking courage. She is balanced on the razor's edge of childhood and adulthood, paranormal and human. Paranormalcy is a wonderful young adult urban fantasy read. Filled with vampires, fairies, and werewolves, plenty of action, romance, and loads of witty dialogue Paranormalcy has something for everyone.
I highly recommend Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, book 1) to readers of young adult, paranormal romance, fantasy, and especially to fans of urban fantasy.

Guest Author Interview: Danielle D. Smith + Swag Giveaway
Please welcome today's guest author Danielle D. Smith. Danielle is the author of Psyche's Gate and Black Dog and Rebel Rose.
EJ: When did you begin writing?
Danielle: I originally began writing as a very young tween, around 11 years old, and was very enthusiastic about epic fantasy stories early on. My poetry and short fiction was published in student journals and newspapers when I was a teenager. I eventually let writing fall by the wayside in order to focus on fine art and painted almost exclusively for about a decade. Then, about two years ago, my husband went into law school and I began to write again in order to decompress from all the stress of paying the bills. The result was Psyche's Gate, my first novel, and since its publication I have never looked back. My second book, Black Dog and Rebel Rose, is hitting the market just in time for Halloween. Very exciting!
EJ: What brought you to the paranormal genre?
Danielle: I have always loved dark mythology, whether that be vampires, werewolves, ghosts, or something more celestial. Angels became the obvious choice for me early on: I was raised by a mother who believes firmly in celestial guardians and guides, and somewhere along the road, the concept stuck. My angels are warriors: strong, sexy, sometimes tormented, always fascinating. My demons closely follow suit.
EJ: If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?
Danielle: I would love to have the ability to drink without getting drunk. Lol! Okay, having wings would be totally cool, too. ;) Being able to take to the skies and fly without limits, to soar up and touch the very stars, would be a wonderful gift.
EJ: Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.
Danielle: Black Dog and Rebel Rose is a steamy horror romp, pure and simple. This is an incredibly focused story, very to the point: two main characters, an abandoned town, and vampyre guts blown all over the place. The sex is sizzling, the dialogue sharper than steel, and when you throw hot motorcycles and tattoos into the mix, how can paranormal fun not be had?
Psyche's Gate, in contrast, is sexy, yet serious. The characters are developed with great care. Psyche is the epitome of the hopeful artist: penniless, yet unable to unchain herself from the creative gift given to her. Alexius is the dark, tormented heavenly warrior who has fallen from grace and into the realm of mortals, the "talking monkeys" that he should despise and be willing to sacrifice in order to regain his stolen wings. In the end, Psyche is the woman that he has been commanded to kill, and yet he finds that he will do anything to spare her from harm. Psyche's Gate is a tale where love is truly meant to conquer all, including the commands of Heaven and Hell.
EJ: If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?
Danielle: Black Dog and Rebel Rose: I'd love to see Mia Kirshner as Rose. The woman manages to be a solid serious actress and ooze a gothy sex appeal all at the same time. As far as Skriker goes, who knows? It'd probably have to be some unknown hottie--Kiefer Sutherland is too old, not tall enough, and not buff enough, even though I always think of Skrike every time I watch The Lost Boys.
Psyche's Gate: Ideally, I would see Natalie Portman cast as Psyche. Natalie manages to be both dainty and strong. She is beautiful, but in an unpretentious manner, just like my heroine. On top of it, I have read that her mother is an artist, so she'd probably be able to appreciate the role.
Alexius was actually based strongly on my husband, Aaron, who is a very talented actor in his own right, so I would ultimately love to see him cast as the "unknown" who made his big break playing the character that was based so perfectly on him. A second choice would probably be Hugh Jackman, with his sculpted figure and intense onscreen presence.
Black Dog and Rebel Rose by Danielle D. Smith.
Skriker.
A meltingly sexy hunter with rock star style. An insatiable seducer and lover of women. Son of a human lady of the night and a True Native of Hell, he is a killer of the evils that dwell in darkness. Fifty miles of bad road will lead him and his rumbling Harley to an abandoned town and the vampyre hunt of his dreams. It is in the rot and the ruin that Skriker will discover his destiny.
Rose.
A fierce and beautiful huntress haunted by a tragic past. The most amazing woman that Skriker has ever met. A sizzling tryst will lead him to discover that Rose is his soul mate, the girl who will make him abandon his lustful ways and make him hunger for her alone. But Skriker's new beloved harbors an ironic secret. A secret that may lead to a half-demon's gruesome undoing...
