Lockstep by Karl Schroeder.
When seventeen-year-old Toby McGonigal finds himself lost in space, separated from his family, he expects his next drift into cold sleep to be his last. After all, the planet he’s orbiting is frozen and sunless, and the cities are dead. But when Toby wakes again, he’s surprised to discover a thriving planet, a strange and prosperous galaxy, and something stranger still—that he’s been asleep for 14,000 years.
Welcome to the Lockstep Empire, where civilization is kept alive by careful hibernation. Here cold sleeps can last decades and waking moments mere weeks. Its citizens survive for millennia, traveling asleep on long voyages between worlds. Not only is Lockstep the new center of the galaxy, but Toby is shocked to learn that the Empire is still ruled by its founding family: his own.
Toby’s brother Peter has become a terrible tyrant. Suspicious of the return of his long-lost brother, whose rightful inheritance also controls the lockstep hibernation cycles, Peter sees Toby as a threat to his regime. Now, with the help of a lockstep girl named Corva, Toby must survive the forces of this new Empire, outwit his siblings, and save human civilization.

If you were to discover that you've been asleep for 14,000 years, what would you do first? (eat, read, dance, etc...)
14,000 years? I think I'd be quite interested in trying to catch up with history, so reading would play heavily in my plans. What a fascinating idea, thanks for this great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts EXACTLY. *reads ALL THE BOOKS* :)
DeleteThat's a pretty long time. I'd definitely want something good to eat as I tried to figure out the world around me and where I'd fit in. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, FOOD. Definitely time to break that 14,000 year fast! :)
DeleteLooks like a good one...time travel via hibernation.
ReplyDeleteExplore and then read :)
ReplyDeletelook around
ReplyDeleteFirst I would do a major Freak Out -- Massive Panic Attack! Then I would have to get a grip, calm down and start looking around so I could figure out what to do next. linda [at] gordonvalley {dot} com.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would even recognize the world after all that time! I would try to find some sort of news to see what was going on. Then I'd look for food! :)
ReplyDeleteIf I woke up to learn I'd been asleep for 14,000 years, the first thing I would do would be to mourn the loss of my loved ones, because honestly, I doubt they'd have fallen into that same kind of sleep alongside me.
ReplyDeleteThe next thing I'd do is wonder just how many awesome books had been written in that time, and how I could get my hands on them to read them!
