E.J. Stevens Interview on Citywide Blackout WEMF Boston Radio

E.J. Stevens Interview on Citywide Blackout WEMF Boston Radio

I was interviewed recently for the Citywide Blackout program on WEMF Radio Boston.  You can listen to my The Blackout Bootleg radio interview with Citywide Blackout here:

My interview starts around 2:30 and I'm interviewed by show host Max Bowen.  Big thanks to Max Bowen, Citywide Blackout, and WEMF Radio Boston!

 Full show details:

We open the show with a packed house of horror! I interview Izzy Lee, James A. Moore, Scott Goudsward, and John M. McIlveen about The Haverhill Public Library Holiday Bookfear and what makes a good horror story.

Filmmaker Maura Smith has worked on some pretty major films, like Black Mass and Spotlight Movie, but she's also produced some great work that's all her own, some of which was featured at the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival over the summer. She joins Max over the phone with fellow filmmaker Kate Brown, whom she's worked with in the past.

Matt of My Silent Bravery returns to the show with some great new tunes to share with all of you. His new album "Breakthrough" was released earlier this fall to some impressive reviews, and he'll have plenty of shows to come.

The electric rock band Western Education returns to the show for the fourth time to talk about their new album, "Restless Dreams." Their style is such a great blend of electric and rock sounds, and they've accomplished a lot in the last few years.

We're going into extra innings this week! Ed of the brotherly duo Scotch Mist joins me on to talk about their most recent release, some of which is inspired by those very close to home. Plus, he plays live with some stellar tunes!

BONUS: The Blackout Bootlegs are back! Max talks to author E.J. Stevens at the Merrimack Halloween Book Festival. She has an extensive collection of titles, including the popular Ivy Granger series.

Did you enjoy the interview?  Have any questions we missed?  Leave your questions in the comments!

Book Excerpt: One Smoking Hot Fairy Tail

Sitting in her shadow-soaked bedroom, Moselle Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair repeatedly glanced at her smartphone, eager for it to ring. A candelabrum burned seven small red flames, illuminating her room just enough for her to not only spy two of her Abyssinian cats as they chased each other across the marble floor, but to also see what she was mixing.
Moselle poured jojoba oil from a large container into a small, dark glass bottle with a glass rod applicator. Ten drops of jasmine oil from the flowers she had handpicked in her garden the night before splashed into the bottle as she pondered how much ylang-ylang oil she should add to the mix, desiring nothing but the most erotic scent to seduce the man she had been dating.
At the chime of her smartphone, Moselle set the bottles aside and pressed the answer button with the tip of her index finger’s nail.
     “Greetings, Father.”
“You sound disappointed, my daughter.” Moselle’s father’s voice was deep and steeped with his strong Egyptian accent.
“No, no, no… not at all.” Moselle cleared her throat and presented him with the respect he was due. “How may I serve you, Father?”
“I am pleased to inform you that everything has gone as designed with the new Club Afterlife,” he said. “This opening is already being touted as a once-in-a-lifetime, red carpet event.”
     “Blessings be, Father.”
“Have you made travel arrangements yet, Moselle?”
She took a second to compose her words before speaking.
“I have not. Father, it is a great honor to attend, not only as the subject of all of the advertisements in your recent campaign, but as your loving daughter, still I have a request.” She sat up.
“You know full well your mother is currently unable to entertain,” he stated, clearly assuming she was going to ask if her mother could be at the opening.
“Oh, yes that. I haven’t broken bread with Mother since last year’s birthday party. I do miss her.”
“Birthdays?” She heard her father’s dissatisfied tone. “Moselle, you know I find them a foolish distraction.”
     “Yes, I know.”
“Good,” he replied quickly. “I will send the private jet to Los Angeles in two days. It will transport you to New York City for the event.”
“Father, my request,” she reminded him. “I have met someone very special, a young man whom I have been dating. He works at the advertising agency you hired for the new club.”
“Tell me again, Moselle, why do you find them so interesting?” Her father’s tone was filled with frustration and annoyance. “What could you possibly have in common with this… this American?”
“He is strong, handsome, and funny, Father.”
“He is not one of us.”
“I do not care about that. He warms my soul with his humor and kindness. When we work together preparing your advertisements, I find myself inexplicably drawn to him. I have not felt this way in ten or more years.”
     “Moselle!”
Her father’s raised voice startled her so badly her body froze. She had not angered her him in many, many years, not since long before she had moved out of his home into her own.
“Why do you tell me this?”
“I would like him to accompany me to the grand opening as my date,” Moselle answered timidly.
The phone went silent, and Moselle waited patiently.
“So be it,” he conceded. “Invite him, but he will need to find his own means of travel to New York. Understood?”
     “Yes.” Moselle beamed.
“Did you pass along my request to your other friend?”
“I spoke to Sabrina earlier; she accepted the invitation already.”
“She is well now, you say?”
“As well as can be,” Moselle admitted.
“Good, then, regardless, this will be an opening night for all to remember. Safe journey, my daughter.”
“Safe journey to you too, Father.”
Moselle watched the slender metal hands on her wall clock tick forward another notch as she hung up. The hand’s movement boomed in her ears like the footsteps of a titan. It was nearing nine o’clock at night; she had hoped her new boyfriend would have called by now. She unconsciously tapped the bottom corner of her smartphone on the table, harder and harder until… Snap. The protective case broke.
“Curse this devil’s game.” Moselle ran her finger over the jagged crack. “My phone, a sacrifice to you, Hathor. See it not wasted.”
Moselle pressed the speed-dial graphic, a tiny photo associated with his name: Jackson Abernathy.
     “Hello.”
“Jackson, darling, it is Moselle Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair.”
“Hey, Moselle…” He paused a moment before finishing. “What’s happening?”
Jackson’s voice did not ring with the excitement she had yearned for, and she had a clear guess why.
     “Are you still at work?”
“Yeah, I’m putting the finishing touches on that freelance project I did with Candice Swanepoel.”
Moselle finally heard a hint of excitement in his voice, but it was not for her.
“You work too hard and play too little.” Moselle stood feeling suddenly jealous; she was more driven than ever to see Jackson now.
“To be honest, I need the extra money. I lost a few bucks on the game last night.”
Moselle admired herself in the full-length mirror attached to the inside of her closet door as she listened. She examined her eye makeup, which included a coat of sparkling purple mascara that complemented her dark eyes.
“All I am suggesting is that you take a short break.”
“I took a break earlier when you sent me that one text message. The one with the picture attached. What did it say again?”
“It said that tomorrow marks a full month on the calendar since you asked me out. It said to prepare for a night filled with earthly delights.”
Jackson laughed. “Moselle, you are unlike any other girl I’ve ever known.”
“You are right, Jackson. All you have known are girls, scatterbrained models with apathy toward most things. I am a woman, one who knows what she wants.”
“Well… I wanted to finish this project and then get a jump-start touching up that advertisement of you in the silver bikini with the—”
“Jackson.” Moselle’s voice rose in frustration. “Such labor should be done during the hours our beloved sun is high above us.”
“You’re right, but wouldn’t your father be even more impressed with me if I handed him extra work?”
“While I find it pleasing that you strive to win my father’s approval, Jackson, I must ask you this: would you have me spend the next few hours alone while you stare at my likeness, or would you gaze upon me in person over a few drinks?”
“Would you like to go out for coffee, Moselle?”
     “I would love to.”

#BlackFriday #CyberMonday Hunting in Bruges #UrbanFantasy 99 Cent Book Deal

ON SALE TODAY.  Hunting in Bruges, the first novel in the Hunters' Guild urban fantasy series, is only 99 cents for a limited time.

Hunting in Bruges by E.J. Stevens urban fantasy paranormal vampire hunter

Hunting in Bruges (Hunters' Guild #1, Ivy Granger #3.5)

The only thing worse than being a Hunter in the fae-ridden city of Harborsmouth, is hunting vampires in Bruges.

Being shipped off to Belgium sucks. The medieval city of Bruges is quaint, but the local Hunters' Guild is understaffed, the canals are choked with dead bodies, and there's no shortage of supernatural predators as likely suspects.

On second thought, maybe Bruges isn't so bad after all.

With a desire to prove herself, protect the innocent, and advance within the ranks of the Hunters' Guild, Jenna Lehane hits the cobbled streets of Bruges with blades at the ready. Someone, or something, is murdering tourists and dumping their bodies in the city's scenic canals. With the help of a mysterious stranger, Jenna begins to piece together clues that are dotted throughout the city like blood spatter.

Determined to stop the killings, Jenna delves into a bloody local history that only raises more questions—but some secrets are best left buried. Jenna must put her combat training to the test as she struggles to unearth the truth about an ancient enemy.

Hunting in Bruges is the first novel in the Hunters' Guild urban fantasy series set in the award-winning world of Ivy Granger.

Nighthawks Children of Nostradamus Jeremy Flagg

Nighthawks (Children of Nostradamus #1) by Jeremy Flagg.

Twenty-six-year-old painter Conthan Cowan takes art to a shocking frontier…

His debut exhibit features the transformation of his high school friend, Sarah, as she went from a shy, soft-spoken girl to a Child of Nostradamus—an individual gifted with extraordinary abilities. Living in a society where the Children of Nostradamus are captured by the government, Conthan’s exhibit draws attention from officials and protesters alike.

A government psychic may be dead, but that doesn’t stop her from manipulating the future…

The deceased White House aide is only remembered for her failed assassination attempt on the president decades before Conthan was born. Foreseeing her own death, she scribed letters to bring together specific Children of Nostradamus on a mission that will change the world.

On the night of the gallery exhibition, Conthan receives one of those letters…

Whispers from the past direct him to visit Sarah, the subject of his paintings, who like many Children of Nostradamus, is being detained in a government research facility. It’s there he finds himself aligned with a rogue group of Children on a mission to prevent a dark future.

As a dark future unfolds, there's only one hope to stop the destruction of the world...The Children of Nostradamus.

Paranormal Road Trip: Destination Spokane Washington with Cathy Clamp

Paranormal Road Trip: Destination Spokane Washington with Cathy Clamp

Come on boys and ghouls!  It's time to hop on Route 666 for a spooktacular Paranormal Road Trip.

This week's stop is Spokane, Washington and our special guide is Cathy Clamp author of the Tales of the Sazi series and the spin-off Luna Lake series, including new release ILLICIT.

Spokane's Top 5 Spooky Places

The Sazi of Luna Lake novels are set in rural northeastern Washington in Ferry County. Just to the west of Ferry County, and where the residents go to shop and interact with regular humans is Spokane, which has a rich history of hauntings, owing to the gold mines that made the fortunes, or were the deaths of many fortune seekers.

Clark Mansion.  One such fortune seeker was Patrick (known to his friends as “Patsy”) Clark. At the young age of 18, Patsy made his way to the United States from Ireland and quickly mastered the art of mining. He made his way up through the ranks of some of the most well known mines in western America, including the Comstock lode in Nevada, and the Alice Mine in Montana, until he was ready to be owner of his own mines: The Poor Man mine in Spokane and The Republic mine in Ferry County. Patsy and his bride, Mary, lived in the Clark Mansion until their deaths in 1915 and 1923, when it was sold to investors. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the hauntings began and nobody really knows why they started, as the house was never reported to have been the subject of any tragedies. But former employees of the restaurant that it eventually became report strange happenings. Wine bottles are tossed about, voices of at least three entities can be heard in the basement and cold spots and chilled breezes from nowhere are reported.

Mirabeau Park Hotel.  Set among 76 surrounding lakes and multiple golf courses, this luxury resort in Spokane has several permanent (and transparent) residents. A reported suicide of a guest in a room near the front desk has resulted in a spirit who asks night bellman and maids for extra towels but disappears before they can get a room number. The ghosts of a woman and her two children have also been seen by guests and staff alike, and while most of the sightings have been mundane or simply mysterious, some have been frightening. There are also some rooms that more sensitive employees refuse to enter for reasons they can’t explain.

Greenwood Cemetery.  While a haunted cemetery might seem almost like the norm in any major city, Greenwood Cemetery goes a step above. A thousand steps, actually. The staircase at Greenwood Cemetery was supposedly the site of satanic rituals in the past and visitors report that they are unable to make it to the top of the stairs because the disembodied faces of the men, women and children sacrificed appear to prevent them from going further as they climb. Those who have made it to the top report shrieks and cries of the dead greet them and rain pelts their skin, although they never get wet. Don’t try to visit this one, though. The thousand step staircase is on private property and access renovations to the cemetery have made the staircase obsolete.

The Davenport Hotel.  Louis Davenport loved the hotel he built in 1914. In fact, he lived there, in Suite 1105, until his death in 1951. He was reported to have said “I never want to leave here,” before he died. And according to staff, he never did. He died in his beloved room, as did his wife Verus, in 1967. Suite 1105 still houses their spirits. During renovations, wiring blew back and forth in the breeze while workers watched. Except there was no breeze. The windows were sealed and the electricity was off to do the work. Party noisemakers are often reported heard near the room. That sort of makes sense, since the first event in the hotel was a New Years Eve party.  There’s also a spirit haunting the mezzanine in 1920's vintage party wear, walking back and forth through a door. Ellen MacNamara supposedly fell to her death through the lobby skylight by walking through the same door. Employees report that Louis Davenport always seems to appear when guests need attending to. One bellman believes that a ‘legacy of supreme hospitality’ isn’t such a bad spirit for a hotel to have.

Monaghan Hall.  No trip down the paranormal highway in Spokane would be complete without Monaghan Hall on the Gonzaga University campus. James Monaghan was another Irishman who made the rags to riches journey because of the mines. Except he wasn’t a miner.  He was a trader and shipper who contracted with the U.S. mail and Army to haul freight, and with steamboat and ferry companies to bring goods to the bustling mine area. By 1909 he was a millionaire. He became a county commissioner and justice of the peace and by the time of his death in 1916 of natural causes, “Spokane Jim” had a funeral procession that was one of the largest in the city’s history. Jim was among the first graduating class of Gonzaga College and was later donated heavily to the Jesuit-run learning institution. There are any number of rumors about how Monaghan Hall came to be haunted.

One of the most widely believed is that a young seminary student hanged himself in the attic and it’s his spirit that roams the halls. But organ music can often be heard as well, and reportedly, it’s the same music heard at Spokane Jim’s funeral. Another tie to Monaghan is that a photograph of the donor, lying in state, was supposedly found by an historical society in a hole in a dirt wall in the basement of the Hall that shows the crucifixes around his coffin upside down. A housekeeper reported that attempts to burn the photograph failed and it was buried there instead. A former director of music, responding to the reports of hauntings, began to sleep on his office couch and was frequently awakened by the sound of phantom flautists and organists and also by doors opening and shutting with nobody there.  There are varying reports of “rituals” being done in the 1970s (although the university does not admit to any sort of exorcism being done) to remove the entities that witnesses reported would cause feelings of tingling skin, paralysis and a strangling sensation.

Thank you Cathy for giving us such a haunting tour of Spokane!

Whitechapel Paranormal Society Cover Reveal: Eeper Weeper and One for Sorrow

October is the perfect time to unveil the debut covers from the upcoming Whitechapel Paranormal Society series.  Keep reading for a chance to win a $15 Amazon Gift Card.

New Victorian Gothic Horror Series Set in London's East End.

The Whitechapel Paranormal Society is coming in 2017.  Until then, we have these gorgeous covers from Phatpuppy Art Studios and Sacred Oaks Press.

Eeper Weeper Whitechapel Paranormal Society Victorian Horror by E.J. Stevens

Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5) by E.J. Stevens

The great and prestigious man of science, Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had somehow made a mistake. I wasn’t good and I wasn’t normal. His experiment had failed.

The tedium and terrors of Josephine "Jo" Hadley's existence within the stone walls of London's Bethnal Asylum are interrupted by a strange visitor, Cora Drummond, a woman who demands to interview one of the asylum's most insane residents. The patient's rantings include tales of ghosts and demons, but it is the bizarre, near-riotous muttering of prophetic nursery rhymes that follow Jo throughout the asylum wards that is most illuminating to Miss Drummond.

Eeeper Weeper, chimney sweeper. Had a wife, but couldn't keep her...

Days later, Jo and her adoptive father receive an invitation to attend an exclusive tea at the prestigious Whitehall Club. But the request for Jo's attendance is more than it might seem. She has caught the attention of a secret branch of government working directly for the queen.

Will Jo Hadley's unusual talent for inciting prophetic nursery rhymes prove useful to the crown? She is given one chance to demonstrate her worth to the Special Paranormal Research Branch, but this is one mission that even the most highly trained operatives might not survive.

Eeper Weeper is a prequel short story in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series by award-winning author E.J. Stevens. One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) takes place six years after the prequel short story Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5). The Whitechapel Paranormal Society series is a Victorian horror (dreadpunk) series set in London's East End.

One for Sorrow Whitechapel Paranormal Society Victorian Horror by E.J. Stevens

One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) by E.J. Stevens

Afternoon tea had served us up a demon.

It is six years since Josephine "Jo" Hadley joined the ranks of the Special Paranormal Research Branch and three years since the S.P.R.B.'s mission was terminated. After their superiors declare that the supernatural threat is quelled, Jo and her colleagues returned to civilian life with varying degrees of success. But when Jo, Edith, and Flan cross paths with a slogoth demon there is no escaping the terrible truth. The supernatural threat was never defeated.

One for sorrow. Two for mirth. Three for a funeral. Four for a birth. Five for Heaven. Six for Hell. Seven for the Devil, his own self.

Demons and necromancers went into hiding within the labyrinthine warrens of Whitechapel, but after three years of secretly feasting on the souls of London's East End they are back stronger than ever before. Will the Whitechapel Paranormal Society rise up from the ashes of the S.P.R.B., or will all of London become the Devil's playground?

One for Sorrow is the first full-length novel in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series by award-winning author E.J. Stevens.

Determined to stop the killings, Jenna delves into a bloody local history that only raises more questions--but some secrets are best left buried. Jenna must put her combat training to the test as she struggles to unearth the truth about an ancient enemy.

Hunting in Bruges is the first novel in the Hunters' Guild urban fantasy series set in the world of Ivy Granger. The world of Ivy Granger, including the Ivy Granger Psychic Detective series and Hunters' Guild series, is filled with bloodsucking vampires, psychotic faeries, and snarky, kick-butt heroines.

Whitechapel Paranormal Society Book Excerpt: Eeper Weeper

On October 12th we'll be unveiling the covers to Eeper Weeper and One for Sorrow, the first two books in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series, the new Victorian Gothic horror series by E.J. Stevens.  Today we have a sneak peek ARC book excerpt for you.

Book Excerpt: Eeper Weeper

“I didn’t hear you come in, my dear,” Doctor Hadley said, looking up from his paperwork.
“You were quite engrossed in your work, father,” I said.
It was true.  Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley was always obsessed with documenting the progress, or failures, of his latest experiments.  He was driven by what he claimed was his duty to God and crown and all humankind.  He would solve the mysteries of the human brain and fix all that he saw as evil and flawed in the many patients who filled the asylum outside these office walls.
“Are you wearing the shoes that I bought you?” he asked, eyes narrowing as he scrutinized the lower portion of my dress, as if he could force the fibers to part with his will and show him whether or not I had indeed offended him.
I went rigid, every muscle tensing as I prepared myself for what might follow.  I was wearing the shoes in question, but I’d forgotten to screw the metal plates back onto the bottom of each shoe, a mistake that could be seen as dangerous rebellion, or worse.  I forced breath into my lungs and bowed my head dutifully to the man I now called father, the man who was my salvation and my greatest enemy.
I chose my words carefully all too aware of what this monster was capable of.
“I am sorry, father,” I said, casting my eyes to the floor.  “I reached for my old shoes out of habit.  It won’t happen again.”
“No, I dare say it won’t,” he said, piercing me with his gaze.
I held my breath, waiting for him to call for the orderlies to take me to the basement where I’d be subjected to endless questions.  There would be no comfort, no food, no sleep within the stone walls of my father’s laboratory.  But fatigue and hunger were not the worst of my fears.  I’d faced that much on the streets after my parents died.
It was what came after, when I was weak and tired and restrained, that was what turned my blood to ice in my veins.
I focused on the mundane sensation of pain where my corset dug into my ribs on one side.  The bruise that blossomed there was just one more black mark upon my character.  Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had quite particular views on proper womanly behavior, and deep inhalations were not to be tolerated by the fairer, weaker sex.
Indeed, as with the metal plates on my shoes to warn of my presence, the poor fit of my corset was calculated with the utmost scientific precision.
I knew all of this to be true.  For although I’d often questioned what was real and what was delusion since entering the asylum’s unscalable walls, the proof of my treatment plan was all around me.  My father had dedicated fifty-one percent of his office—such a large amount of space when one considers the number of unfortunate souls under his care—to the charts, diagrams, and sketches of the devices and techniques currently in use upon my person.
But even more terrible were the detailed sketches for the procedures and gadgets that loomed in my future like a scalpel held aloft in the operating theater.  Before my parents’ deaths, I’d believed that knowledge held the power to dispel fear and worry.  The good doctor’s diagrams, always in full view, were evidence of my childish innocence.  Knowing and anticipating the horrors to come was much worse than any level ignorance, no matter how low.
So I focused on the pain below my breast and tried to empty my mind.  Whatever was to come would come.  It was best not to think on it.
“My dear, I am disappointed, but you say that you put on the incorrect shoes out of habit,” he said, tapping his desk with the tip of an ink stained finger.  “I would not wish to alter this behavior too greatly, not when habit and routine are the greatest methods by which we can restore the damaged mind.”
I risked a quick glance from his hands to his face, tears rising unbidden to join the hope that swelled inside my bruised chest.  Had I truly escaped from this encounter unscathed?  I measured my breathing by the ticking of the brass clock atop the mantelpiece before responding.  A misstep now would destroy the limited goodwill my earlier comment had earned.
“I am sorry, father,” I said.  “I will build a new habit with the shoes you’ve bought me.”
“And these new shoes, are they quite comfortable?” he asked.
My hand tightened into a fist at my side, but I kept my tone even as I replied, “The shoes only pinch if I walk quickly…which I know only from when I hastened to put out my light at the scheduled hour.”
He nodded, a satisfied smile on his lips as he made a notation in his ledger.  I fixed the docile gaze of a dutiful daughter onto my face and waited for him to blot the page.       Finally, he looked up from his desk and gestured for me to take the tray of discarded tea things, which had been the reason for this visit inside his domain.
But as I moved forward, he caught my wrist.
“If you promise to be good, I’ll let you join the patients in the garden,” he said, eyes alight.  “You will be good, won’t you, Josephine?”
     “Yes, father,” I said.
I would behave, but I daren’t hope that I would ever be good again.  All that was right and true and innocent had died in the fire that killed my family.  But I’d learned how to survive, first on the streets and now under the care and tutelage of my benefactor.  I was his ward and I’d learned to do his bidding.  I created a façade of grace, calm, and benevolence, but Doctor Hadley was a perceptive man.  He’d made studying anomalous behavior his life’s work, which made him a difficult man to fool.
But I would pretend to be good, and hope that news of my “episodes” did not reach him.  So far, I’d managed to bribe the staff with cakes and other sweets that I’d saved from my supper.  I was too thin already, so I could scarcely afford to give them up, but without a means of bribery, I was as good as ruined.
I was the doctor’s success story.  He’d taken me in and made a proper woman out of me, driving out ill habits and unsuitable behavior with various experimental therapies.
My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth as I cleared away the morning’s dishes from his desk.  He turned back to his work, dismissing me from his presence.  I was once again unremarkable, a fixture in the room.  If I were lucky, oh so lucky, I would remain that way.  To be in that man’s notice was a position so dire, I’d not wish it on the lowliest sinner, no not even the Devil himself.
I moved steadily to the door, practice and determination the only thing keeping the tea things from shaking noisily on the tray.  I bit my lip and slid the door open wider, careful not to open it past the point at which it creaked.
I knew all the sounds of this room, all the whispers, moans, and cries of this entire rambling monstrosity of an estate.  From the kitchens to the basement laboratories to the endless, winding halls of cell doors, this place was my home and my prison.
It didn’t matter that I was the doctor’s adopted daughter and not an inmate.  My actions were just as scrutinized, my freedom just as limited.  I was an ongoing experiment in a fancy hat and pretty dress.
If I was to survive, then I had to keep the doctor from learning the truth.  I had to keep secret the thing the staff had already begun whispering about in the shadows.  The great and prestigious man of science, Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had somehow made a mistake.  I wasn’t good and I wasn’t normal.
     His experiment had failed.

The Whitechapel Paranormal Society series is a Victorian Gothic horror (dreadpunk) series set in London's East End.

Q+A with Jennifer W. Smith (The Forsaken Pearl)

Please welcome today's guest author, Jennifer W. Smith.  Jennifer is the author of the Broken Water series, including THE FORSAKEN PEARL.

Q+A with Jennifer Smith

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Jennifer:
I began writing stories at the young age of ten. For many years, I just dabbled in novel writing until I finished my debut novel, Flying Backwards, in 2015.

EJ:  What brought you to the fantasy genre?

Jennifer:
After writing a contemporary romance, Flying Backwards, I wanted to try writing something different. The Broken Water Series has fantasy, history, evolution theory, adventure and romance. The Rare Pearl: Book One is inspired by a local hotel in New Hampshire. The Wentworth-by-the-Sea hotel is over one-hundred years old and was almost torn down in the 1980s. When I was a kid, and the hotel was going through troubled times, the vacant building gave off a mysterious vibe and I’ve always wanted to write about it. So now it’s tied into the Broken Water series.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Jennifer:
Hmm, I’d like to be a Vampire if I could have eternal life with Robert Pattinson (from Twilight). Oh yeah!

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Jennifer:
The Forsaken Pearl: Book 2 is an easy read, but has an intertwining plot that is engaging and planned out. The characters have flaws and fears that they must overcome. While the adventure moves the story along, the story has historic tidbits and several mysteries along the way. Adding to the mixture, there is more than one forbidden romance. This series is for a broad audience—there’s something for everyone.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Jennifer:
When writing, I build a story board—I’m a visual person. Pinned there now is Robert Pattinson as Kodiak (surprise). For Harmony Parker, Chloe Grace Moretz is who I picture. And for the water god, Suijin, Jason Momoa’s god-like physique fits the bill!

The Forsaken Pearl (Broken Water #2) by Jennifer W. Smith.

Recruited to stabilize the duel realms, Harmony Parker is followed into the human world by her new husband. Kodiak left everything behind to be with his mix-blooded wife. He soon realizes he’s lost a vital part of himself caused by the portal crossing—his ability to remain underwater for an extended period of time. Adjusting to their new life tests their fragile relationship, especially when he is offered work on the Great Lakes expedition, ultimately leaving Harmony alone in the world once again.

In the alternate realm, Finn becomes chieftain. However, his old enemy Gale returns threatening to interfere with the peace between Finn’s tribe on Niagara Falls and the clans on the New England seacoast.  Gale schemes to abduct Harmony and force her to help Finn stop another foe—the Water God.

Evolution shifted in the realms over the last century, allowing a new race to emerge. The result has the Water God fascinated with Harmony and her unique abilities. Harmony is propositioned by the god, who she believes drowned her entire family. Harmony must choose her fate or risk losing those she loves most.

Q+A with Levi Black (Red Right Hand)

Please welcome today's guest, Levi Black, author of RED RIGHT HAND.

Q+A with Levi Black

EJ:  When did you begin writing?

Levi:
2009 was the year I decided I could write a book. I'd read a book that didn't come close to living up to its hype and said: “I can write better shit than that.” and proceeded to google: how do you write a novel. The search took me to Lilith Saintcrow's blog where she had a series of essays about real life writing advice. I devoured her blog and realized I could indeed write a book. So I did. That book became my first sale. (It wasn't RED RIGHT HAND.)

EJ:  What brought you to the paranormal genre?

Levi:
A lifelong fascination with all things spooky, weird, and occult. Even as a child I read books I wasn't supposed to and that led me to many lurid books because of their lurid covers, including a string of occult and ghost novels from the 70's and into the 80's.

EJ:  If you could be any paranormal or have any one supernatural talent, what would it be? Why?

Levi:
Immortality. With immortality all other things are possible. You can accumulate wealth, knowledge, lovers, almost anything your heart desires.

EJ:  Tell us why readers will enjoy your new release.

Levi:
I give you all the creeps of Lovecraft without the dreary pacing of Lovecraft. This is a Lovecraftian horror novel with urban fantasy pacing. It's bloody, violent, intense, and scary.

EJ:  If your book(s) were being made into a movie, who would you cast for the leading roles? Why?

Levi:
This is a tough one.

For Charlie I like Daisy Ridley because she killed it as Rey in the new Star Wars. Rey and Charlie have a lot in common and she could bring both the terror and the toughness needed. I know she's a hot commodity in hollywood, having been in a huge franchise blockbuster, but she is my honest choice.

The Man In Black is far tougher. Casting the Crawling Chaos is not easy.  I'd say Idris Elba, but he's much bigger than I imagine the Man In Black to be, but those acting chops are on point. I'd also give the nod to Zachary Quinto because he definitely can pull off the sinister snark of the Man In Black.

But really, in my head, the Man In Black is always Nick Cave. Yes he is a musician, and the singer of the song that inspired the title RED RIGHT HAND, but he has the jangly, loose-limbed swagger I see the Man In Black having.

Red Right Hand dark urban fantasy by Levi Black

Red Right Hand by Levi Black

Charlie Tristan Moore isn't a hero. She's a survivor. On a night when her demons from the past are triggered, she arrives home to something even more harrowing-an attack by three monstrous skinhounds, creatures straight out of nightmares. She fights but is outmatched. Just as hope seems lost, in sweeps The Man In Black, a rescuer even more monstrous and unlikely, dressed in a long, dark coat that seems to have a life of its own and with a black-bladed sword held in his terrible, red right hand.

Her rescue comes at a cost. She must become his new Acolyte and embrace a dark magick she never knew she had inside her. To ensure she gives it her all, he takes her friend and possible love, Daniel, in thrall as a hostage to her obedience. The Man in Black, a Lovecraftian chaos god, claims to be battling his brethren gods, other horrors who are staging an incipient apocalypse. But is he truly the lesser of all evils or merely killing off the competition? Either way, will Charlie be strong enough to save herself, Daniel, and possibly the entire world?
